Canon: Hunter x Hunter
Canonpoint: Chapter 359, shortly after boarding the Black Whale
Background: Link to wiki here!
Inventory: A pistol, if that's okay! Only with whatever ammunition was already inside. If not, just the clothes on his back will do!
Abilities:
Kurapika is a nen user, which in the Hunter x Hunter canon, means that he can use his life energy (called "aura") to accomplish all sorts of things. Nen users often have 1) mastery over a number of "basic" techniques, and 2) a technique (called a "hatsu") they develop that specifically suits their skills and nen affinity.
Here are the notable "basic" nen abilities that Kurapika has:
🩸 Ten / Shu — Involves wrapping aura around oneself or around objects in order to increase defense and durability. Kurapika uses this technique to strengthen his weapons.
🩸 Ren / Gyo — Involves focusing aura and ejecting it out to increase offense. One can also focus aura into one specific body part for this technique, greatly increasing the strength of that area (ex: focusing it in your fist to do a super good punch.)
🩸 Zetsu / In — Involves erasing your aura to increase stealth. Also allows Kurapika to make things conjured by his aura, like his chains, invisible to the naked eye.
🩸 Life sensing — Because all living things emit aura, nen users can typically sense and locate other living things. In Kurapika’s case, he can sense the general location and distance of other people.
Aside from basic applications of nen like the ones above, Kurapika has also developed special techniques that suit his nen "type." Kurapika's nen type is Conjuration, which means he can manifest his aura into physical objects.
Kurapika conjures a special set of chains made of his aura, which he wears on his right hand through a set of five rings. The chain attached to each finger has a different ability:
🩸 Dowsing Chain — used for divination and lie detection. Kurapika can dangle this chain above maps and divinate the location of people. If dangled in front of someone while asking a question, the chain will swing if the person lies.
🩸 Chain Jail — for capturing people, and it forces the person captured into a depowered state. Kurapika is physically incapable of using this power on anyone but his in canon enemies though, so it won't ever be used in game!
🩸 Holy Chain — for healing his own injuries. It basically accelerates his own natural healing, such that he can heal a broken arm in a few seconds, for example.
🩸 Judgement Chain — victims pierced with this chain are given conditions by Kurapika, and if they are not followed, the chain kills them. For example, if he pierces you with the Judgment Chain, and says "you have to answer my question honestly," and you lie, the chain would kill you. This is an ability that will require other player's permission to use on other PC's!
🩸 Steal Chain — victims pierced with this chain can have their abilities temporarily stolen by Kurapika, who can then bestow the stolen power onto others. I'm going to nerf this ability entirely because it is OP, and I also assume it would only work on abilities from his home world.
One note about his chains is that several of them can only be used if he enters a state called "Emperor Time." In this state, Kurapika loses one hour of his lifespan for every second that he keeps it activated. Thus, in order to make his Holy Chain heal his injuries, or use the Judgement Chain on other people, he must be in this state. He has a bit of built in nerfing aside from the lifespan shortening; he'll get extremely sick and knock out if he tries to use this state too much. I'll nerf this by making it so he gets sicker faster from using this!
CHARACTER SURVEY
What are your character's motivations? What drives them? Who are some important people to them, if anyone?
Kurapika's main motivation is revenge. Five years prior to the start of his canon, his entire clan was killed by a group of bandits (the Phantom Troupe), and their scarlet eyes were stolen to be sold on the black market. Kurapika was the only survivor, as he happened to not be in the village at the time.
Enacting revenge on those responsible for the deaths and mutilation of his clan is what drives him - it could be said it's the only thing that drives him forward, as most of what he does in life is to make advances on capturing/killing the Troupe or retrieving the scarlet eyes. He wants very desperately to avenge his people, to the point that his own personhood and relationships suffer as a result.
However, the most important people to him are Gon, Killua, and Leorio - all people he met during the Hunter's exam. He is especially protective of Gon and Killua, as he sees the two of them as being similar to his childhood best friend. Of course, his late fellow clan members are also deeply important to him.
If given the chance, what would your character change about themselves or their circumstances?
Kurapika feels a great sense of loss and loneliness over having nowhere to return to even after he finishes his mission. He would want to change that, and have a "home" to go to when he finishes; whether that home is a person - someone who will accept him after his arduous journey - or a physical space for him to return to, he wants to change his circumstances of having nowhere to belong anymore.
Strengths? Favorite things?
His main strengths are his intellect, his confidence, and his drive. Kurapika is super smart and logical! And he has confidence to back it up - he doesn't get intimidated easy. When Kurapika sets his mind to something, he's gonna get it done, because he has super intense focus and drive.
Favorite things: watching Gon and Killua play around, reading a good book, and the forest he grew up in.
Weaknesses? Fears and phobias? Anything they regret or avoid?
His two big weaknesses are his independence, and his self-destruction. Kurapika self-isolates from other people in order to focus on his revenge, often leaving everyone he knows on read for many months at a time, even when those people are in dire need. His revenge plot has also consumed him, to the point that he feels he has lost most of himself in pursuit of his goals. And he hasn't just lost himself, either - he's lost years of his life due to the conditions of his nen (having to trade big chunks of his lifespan to use his powers well.) His self-destructive tendencies are super prominent.
One of his biggest fears is that he won't be able to retrieve all the eyes before he's killed by 1) other people, or 2) the conditions of his nen. He regrets setting these conditions, and he also regrets ever endangering Gon and Killua by involving them in fighting the Troupe.
He avoids letting himself get close to other people; he hates the thought that the people close to him will get wrapped up in his revenge or targeted because of him, and is very afraid of losing anyone else ever again. So, he avoids close relationships as a sort of defense mechanism.
Where does your character fall on the moral spectrum? Are they the average, law-abiding citizen? A mischief-maker? A genocidal villain? What are some of the things they've done for or against the greater good?
Kurapika falls below the average, law-abiding citizen on the moral spectrum. While compassionate and generally wanting to do good, he also purposefully joined the underbelly of society in order to enact his revenge; he's climbed up the ladder in the mafia world, and even makes alliances with minor villains for the sake of getting information. He lets 12 year old kids help him try to enact his revenge. He has threatened, coerced, and bribed all sorts of people in his journey to retrieve the scarlet eyes. He's definitely done things he's not proud of! Even though he thinks of them as necessary actions.
As far as "for the greater good," he's killed off two members of the Phantom Troupe, who are as previously mentioned a world famous band of thieves. They kill a lot of people and steal a lot more, so his revenge mission to kill them off does have a general positive net gain for the rest of the world (not that it's Kurapika's main focus.)
